I believe in heaven on earth”.

Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, better known by his pseudonym Corneille, was a founding member of CoBrA, one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. Other founding members included Karel Appel, Constant and Asger Jorn (who were variously based in Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam - hence the acronym CoBrA).

Although created some time after they officially disbanded as a (very short-lived) group, 'Un Rêve Végétal' (A Vital Dream) is great example of the CoBrA commitment to spontaneity and experiment in colour and form. They relied on their instincts and sought a child-like naivety and joy in their work, opposing themselves to what they saw as the more cerebral, over-wrought work of the Abstract Expressionists and Surrealists.

This lithograph on wove paper is number 2 in an edition of 200. It bursts with colour and life. As the French title indicates, it was created at a time when Corneille lived in Paris. He travelled extensively, however, and the influences of, particularly, Morocco, Cuba and Brazil infiltrate his celebratory art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0859/1445/2310/files/flowersmountainsetc-unrevevegetal-1_61088bc4-8523-46ad-b9fc-f5112a155c6b.png?v=1789559609
