Using Fin Fellowes' Harlequin wallpaper as a starting point, I wanted to use this pattern particularly because it has the wonderful effect of feeling like its been painted onto the walls, you can see the brush strokes and paint splatters and the paper texture gives it a real sense of life and depth. Fins inspiration came from a Tirzah Garwood Marble, like Fin, I had seen and been in aw of the same exhibition and wanted to draw inspiration from Tirzah’s work. I keep coming back to Garwood’s wood engravings, witty, honest and frankly some pretty good interiors depicted. 'Tirzah’s room’ is taken from ’The Grandmother’, theres a deep sense of comfort and familiarity in this piece, not just the figure itself, a snoozing granny, but the textures of the curtians and rug, the frill on the armchair, the harmony-clash of the patterns, its supremely homely and unpretentious. Tirzah was an expert at seeing the beauty in domestic and every day scenes. I wanted to imbue this feeling in this room, homely, familiar and textured. Unintentionally, this room is made up almost entirely of female makers and designers, is there a coded language which comes through women’s work? A subtle comfort and material honesty perhaps? Nothing is shouting louder than the others, everything has the space to speak. Reminds me of a certain group of women I know...
